Humanist Funeral Services

Humanist funeral services are memorial ceremonies for people who did not practice a certain religion or is generally not a faith based service. Statistic indicate that humanist services are given for almost half of the men and women living in the United States.Often people live their life affiliated with some religion or church and because they have not practiced that faith during life opt to have a humanist funeral service instead.

Relating death to religious teachings is just one purpose of a funeral service, because of this many choose to have a humanist ceremony in its place. During this type of service, family and friends gather to acknowledge the death, offer support to each other and express their grief.

A friend or family member may officiate this type of service. Sometimes the family may choose to have a member of the clergy to officiate but without religious overtones. The service ceremony includes funeral music, group singing, and readings of poetry or literature from various writers that may have held some special meaning by the deceased.

Group participation is becoming increasing popular in funeral ceremonies similar to those of Protestant and Catholic services. If you desire to make an expression at the funeral, it’s best to discuss this with the family first in order to allot enough time as its incorporated into the order of service.

While this type of funeral service is not tied to any religious philosophy, it does assist the surviving family members a chance to grieve and accept the death of their loved one.
