Eulogy for a Sister

My name is Amy, I am Mary’s eldest sister. I had a difficult time last week hearing that Amy had passed away. Amy was very young, and had a lot of life left in her. News of her passing was very difficult to digest. Amy and I often talked about death, and how we would have wanted to handle death or our funerals in the event that one of us passed away. We both agreed that if something happened, we would have wanted the other person to celebrate our lives, instead of spending time mourning.

So, in memory of Amy’s life, rather than in memory of her death, I wanted to share a few tidbits about Amy that will make you smile.

Amy was a wonderful person. We spent a lot of time together. We lived together for several years before Amy ventured out on her own during the last decade of her life. Amy was always up for the next best adventure. She spent time traveling through Europe, visiting Germany, Greece, France, and even took a trip through African on missions. I loved her excitement and enthusiasm for helping people. She had a huge heart.

When Amy returned from her last trip abroad the doctors found a lump in her breast. Rather than grump about it, Amy celebrated. She had spent so much time abroad, she decided to give up her possessions, and sell her home. We moved back in together, enjoying a lot of time doing the things that we loved best once more. This included spending time in the early evenings being silly, dancing, singing and listening to oldies.

Amy was so goofy, she would insist on wearing rainbow colored and purple wigs. Nothing was ever too eccentric for Amy. I spent time videotaping some of her best moments, and I would like to share some of those with you at the reception. Her beautiful smile and laughter are something no one can deny are inspirational. I hope that all of you will remember Amy for her generous heart, and her loving character. In memory of Amy, I would like to take some time at the reception listening to some of her favorite music, and dancing. While I know that our hearts are grieving, I also know that Amy is above, looking down on us and dancing from heaven. She would expect that we would be celebrating the good times in her life, and I would hate to disappoint her. Thank you Amy, for being such a great sister, and an inspiration to all of the people that you touched in life. We’ll miss you, and we will go in in life, celebrating the good things in life, and the happy moments, living each life to the fullest.

In memory of Amy we have started a charity that will provide funds for a mission that Amy started. There is more information about this in the reception area. Please feel free to talk with me more about this after the funeral. Thanks again for all of your support.
